Entertainment in Kunming
Kumming, as the economic and cultural center of Yunnan Province, also takes the lead in all manner of entertainment. Travelers weary from treks in Yunnan and Western China can easily find a few days' relaxation and fun in Kunming. Pleasant open-air spots abound in the City of Eternal Spring and the region's Dai and Yi peoples stage a number of colorful festivals and performances year round.
The Xinyin residential area on the east of the city has a few blocks clustered with all different styles of "tea house", or "Chinese bars" near the Guanfang Hotel. Although frequented by the local people for a relaxing chat or a round of Chinese chess over a fragrant cup of Yunnan tea, the Xinyin area still attracts Western tourists with its special atmosphere that combines traditional tea drinking with a comfortable, modern setting.
The provincial capital's residential east side is home to several teahouses, mainly near the Guanfang Hotel. Try some Yunnan tea and settle into a card game or a good book. Livelier options can be found in the Kundu bar area near Dongfeng Xi Lu. Evening welcomes crowds to the area's bars, karaoke venues, discos and video arcades. Bars like Fengqing Island and the Cool Bar host live music and you can grab cheap beers at Hump on Jinbi Lu or dig the DJ at Café de Camel. The city has a large foreign student population. The bars and cafes around Green Lake (Cui Hu) and near the university are good bets - try the Black Knight Club or Camel Bar.
Since Kunming featured a rich minority nationality character. The Peacock Dance originated from the Dai Minority group deeply impressed all the people. The dance performance held at a concert hall near the Horizon Hotel is an excellent exhibition of the songs and dance of the minority tribes in Yunnan. The movements of the principal dancer in the very famous Peacock Dance are so fascinating and it will really impress you. It is definitely worth the money.
Yunnan is famous for the different types of festivals celebrated within the province and the most important of them is the Kunming International Tourist Festival which takes place between April and May every year. This festival brings foreign tourists together from different parts of the world, all dressed up in oriental style and participating in all types of Chinese activities. There is the Shilin Stone Forest tour, the Stone Forest Torch Carnival, Daguan Lake Park tours, Green Lake Park tours, bowling activities, the night market exhibition, horticultural exhibitions, and local food festivals.
For those who like relaxing at a movie, the New Kunming Cinema in the middle of Nanping Road has just the ticket: Ten movie halls, a family balcony, a singing and dance performance hall, a bar, and snack bars.
