The ultimate power and control held by the emperor were symbolized by architectural buildings such as imperial palaces.
The earliest known palace in China can be traced back to the early period of the Shang Dynasty. The palace which was located in Henan Province, was built on a foundation of tamped earth and bore the layout whereby the front halls were designated for official work while the back quarters were reserved for leisure and living. The imperial palace of Tang dynasty, Daming Palace, was built in 634 AD and located in Chang?an city (Xi?an today). It was built on high grounds and the most magnificent looking halls of the palace were Huanyuan Palace, Xuanzheng Palace and Zichen Palace. There were many imperial palaces in ancient, but most of them were destroyed during the wars or alternate of dynasties. Today, the most famous existent imperial palace is the Forbidden City during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
