Acupuncture and Moxibustion

Acupuncture and Moxibustion are the therapeutic methods developed in China thousands of years ago.

Acupuncture is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine. It's a traditional Chinese medical technique by inserting a special kind of needles at particular points on the body to stimulate the "Qi" (energy forces) and blood flow. It is thought the needles on the right points on the body will promote the "Qi" (energy forces) to flow evenly and thus balance the "Yin" and "Yang" state of the body. Traditional Chinese medicine believed "Qi", in a form of energy forces in human's body, flows through the body through 14 main pathways called meridians (insert pictures here for the meridians). When "Qi" flows evenly and freely, the body is in the harmony state of "Yin" and "Yang", and thus healthy. Just like the flow of water through the stream, "Qi" could be blocked by obstruction of a certain kind, the unbalance of "Yin" and "Yang" occurred. Inserting needles to specific points ("Xie" in Chinese) to unblock the "Qi” is the basic concept of Chinese acupuncture in traditional Chinese medicine. Traditonal Chinese medicines have identified more than 500 specific points ("Xie"). (Show the picture here). Each "Xie" point has its specific effects for different illness. Acupuncture practice has a history of more than 2,000 years in China. Though scientists could not demonstrate the physical evident of "Qi", or the actual unblocking of "Qi", Chinese acupuncture has gained it's recognition in Western society. Many physicians and hospitals are now offering acupunctures as a alternative medical therapy. It is estimated that more than 10 million Americans per year received acupuncture treatments for allergies, asthma, arthritis, migraines, paralysis, stoke, vision problems, stress, sexual dysfunction, and many other illness.

Moxibustion, another effective therapy, was discovered by ancient people when they sat down around a fire. They found that the heat not only kept them warm but also relieved certain physical pains. Then they started to use moxa leaves for the same purpose. Today, in the treatment moxa leaves are ignited over certain points on the skin’s surface.
