Basic Theory
The basic theory of Chinese medicine attempts to explain the nature of life cycle and disease changes. It includes five theories: "Yin" and "Yang", the five elements, and the theory of Jing and Luo.
Traditional Chinese regarded "Yin" and "Yang" as the two basic energy forces which underline the universe. The balance between "Yin" and "Yang" is the key to achieve harmony of life. One of the major assumptions inherent in traditional Chinese medicine is that illness is a loss of balance of "Yin" and "Yang". Thus, in Chinese medicine practice, a physician will treat the underlying imbalance to reestablish the healthy balance state. Food is a major source of energy for life and therefore food intake has great effect to the "Yin" and "Yang" state of the body. Food is classified according to its "warm" or "cool" in nature in traditional Chinese medicine. "warm" or "cool" has nothing related to the physical temperatures of the food, but a characterization of the energetic effect to the "Yin" or "Yang" state of the body. "Warm" nature of the food contributes "Yang" state of the body, while "cool" nature of the food contributes 'Yin" state of the body. Balancing diet of "warm" or "cool" food will help to achieve harmony state of body.
In the theory of five elements, the material world is cosmically made up of five elements, namely, metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. These five elements move and change constantly to promote and restrain each other. The human body is part of the physical world and the internal organs such as liver, heart, spleen, lungs and kidney correspond with the five element in the quality of wood which can be easily lit up by fire. Thus, a man with liver disorder can easily get angry.
The theory of Jing and Luo holds that the internal human organs are all linked by channels through which blood and Qi (vital energy) circulate. The main channels that run longitudinally are called Jing while the branches that run latitudinal are regarded as Luo. The blockage of blood and Qi in either Jing or Luo seriously affects people’s health. In this case, to clear the blockage to ensure the flow of blood and Qi is the fundamental step in curing diseases.
