Zhuang
Zhuang is the second largest nationality in China. Its population is 14 million. They mainly live in the Guang xi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Small communities of Zhuangs are to be found in Guangdong and Hunan provinces. The Zhuangs observe the same festivals as the Hans. In ancient times, the Zhuangs were polytheistic and also worshipped their ancestors and the ox. The Zhuangs generally were Han dress, though old people sometimes prefer traditional clothing.
The Zhuang ethnic minority has its own language, which belongs to the Zhuang-Dai branch of Zhuang-Dong Austronesian, part of the Chinese-Tibetan Phylum. Ancient Zhuang characters appeared in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), but never got popularized. In 1955 the central government helped them create a writing system based on the Latin alphabet. Still the Chinese language is commonly used among the Zhuangs.
